If you anything about Adult Film, you  know the name Diana DeVoe. What you probably didn't know is that she has decided to BE the business instead of being IN the business.  Diana writes as well as directs adult films. She is the first black woman to direct adult films. As a pioneer in the adult entertainment industry, she has had the chance to change the game. I had the honor to ask her a few questions.






What made you want to direct adult films?


I was in college, earning a journalism degree and working at an adult bookstore with Alexander DeVoe. We were so disappointed in the quality of porn in general and ethnic porn specifically that we decided to get into the business to make it better. A decade and lots of politics later, here we are, directors in our own rights.



Do you think being a college graduate had something to do with you want to stop acting and direct films?

Being a college graduate had nothing directly to do with my ambition to create. That came first, when I was quite young. College and entrepreneurship were manifestations of my ambition. I directed movies before I ever got naked in front of the camera, and became the first black female director in the game. One of the reasons I decided to transition out of performing altogether was that the decision-makers seemed to have trouble taking me seriously behind the camera if I was also still in front of it. I don’t believe I would have gotten the opportunities I did if I had kept performing… It is what it is…




Do you ever miss being in front of the camera?


I miss the lack of responsibility that came from performing for someone else. I shoot, do stills, direct, cast, and edit our movies for Depth Entertainment Family and the projects I do for other companies. The success of each scene of each production is on my head. As a performer, my responsibility to the project ended when they handed me the baby wipes, and that was kinda cool.



I see a lot of women in adult films wear wedding rings. Do you think that takes away from the authenticity of a scene?

Many times the female talent are told to wear wedding rings, if it serves the scene, particularly if the scene is supposed to feature a MILF. But all things being equal, I would guess that those who fantasize about being with that actress could be either completely turned off or even more turned on by the wedding ring. It’s one of the many things we don’t know and don’t bother to find out about our viewers. Maybe you could do a poll…



Is there anyone out there that you want to work with?


In terms of performing, I think I’ve accomplished what I set out to do, for the most part. As far as directing, I would love to helm a production for Digital Playground or GirlFriends Films. I like that they care about quality, and that GirlFriends cares about serving their real-lesbian-sex-loving customer base, which has made them successful despite the dismal economic state of porn.




I recently read an article about a popular black actress who stopped doing adult films because she said the money wasn't good enough. She is now prostituting. Is there money out there for blacks in adult film?

In my opinion, gone are the days when most women, black, white or green, could earn a living solely by performing. Many women perform just to raise their call-girl rates. As there are no Black female stars being promoted by production companies anymore, and companies that produced Black product are slashing their budgets and releases, and sometimes closing their doors, it is harder for us. I’ve never prostituted, but I can certainly see the case for it. Women are able to use condoms, take charge of their rates and hours, and who they interact with.



As a black woman, do you get offended by some of the interracial scenes that are out there?

Do you mean Black woman/White man scenes? There are very few of those (Ghetto Gaggers being a notable example), and they are not technically considered “interracial”. “Interracial” as defined by our industry is a Black man with a non-Black woman. An Asian woman with a White man is not considered “interracial”. Black woman/White man scenes are considered “REVERSE-Interracial”, if they are considered at all. That said, certainly there are plenty titles I find offensive, but that is a matter of taste. The thing I cannot understand is why anyone would name an adult movie “Crack Whores” (a real title!) or anything that makes the viewer think of unattractive women. Aren’t we supposed to be marketing these women as objects of desire? Who gets a stiffy off a crack whore?



What separates your work from everything else that's out there?

First of all, I could shoot a parody of American Idol on a pirate ship in space, and after the bells and whistles are stripped away, everything is a derivative of missionary, doggie and cowgirl. In this sense, ALL MAINSTREAM PORN is essentially the same. Like romantic comedies, you pretty much know how it’s gonna end. What I like to concentrate on is my casting. If the girl wants to have sex with a certain guy, we try to get that guy. At that point 80% of my work as a director is done. The girl WANTS the guy, and even if the girl is not totally the guy’s type, he ENJOYS that she wants him. In productions where I can make those casting decisions, my kill rate (how often we have to ditch a scene because of “physical” problems) is maybe 2%-3%. When I am told to use certain talent by producers who never spend time on the set, my kill rate could rise to 10%. It makes financial sense to cast people accordingly, and a happy set generally ensures a hotter scene.





Is there a movie or a scene you have done that stands out as your favorite?

I shot and produced a movie called “Black Label” about five years ago. I wrote the vignettes, scouted the locations, got my favorite women to grace the set… It was nominated for awards and was my first independent production to be broadcast on pay-per-view and cable. I’m also very proud of “Diaries of a Wife Gone Black”, a series that has featured legends like Sara Jay and Julia Ann.





What else can we expect from Diana Devoe?

I’ve been shooting more music videos, live events and theatrical shorts than porn for the past year. I’m working on a project that will bring all those worlds together with porn, and when I’m done with it, you’ll know…

i have a good girl already so i dont think this would pertain to me. lol. I've run into some girls on a couple of occassions who may want that, but it doesn't bother me, its expected. I've worked with jada fire, caramel, kitten, roxy reynolds, pinky, tyra lynn fox, dana dearamond ,gabby quinreros, and jesscia bangkok, kapri styles. all flavas man. i have no top five, its all good, one of my favorite scenes is with kapri styles in my movie spinal tap 7, yes the title speaks for itself. as far as anyone to work with, whoever wants to bump bodies with me, its all love.
 
If I were you, I would probably fall in love after every scene I  do will a woman. Has this ever happened to you? If so, what was the result?

no can't say that i have, i pretty much keep it business.

Do you have children? If not when do you plan to? no children,

Just neices and nephews. children in the future, possibly, but right now just focusing on my business and enjoying life.

What kind of music do you listen to? Do you listen to Hip-Hop music?  

If so who is your favorite?i listen to jazz, soul music, some house and reggae. I listen to hip hop cause i came from that culture, i listen to old school hip hop, ie;rakim, krs one, native tongue and currently, mos def, talib , roots, etc.

I just saw a video with Pinky where she describes how her family reacted. It was a nightmare. How did your family react to you doing adult film?

my mother wasn't cool with it cause being the youngest  she was just overprotective and religious. Everyone else in my family was cool with it cause they had a celeb in the fam, lol, but for real  they just said be careful and get something out of it, ie DEF.

I cant cook for my life. Do you cook for women?

  If so, what is your specialty?i would cook for women from time to time when i was solo, i would cook things like pasta and chicken, nothing special, never claim to be chef boyrdee.

Describe your ideal woman.......

smart, good looking , supportive and driven. I found it.

I was very scared when I made a woman squirt for the first time. What was your first reaction?

i bugged out, i thought she pissed on herself.

I read that you do yoga. What made you start? How does it benefit you?

I got into yoga through a chick i used to hang out with, she turned me on to it and it worked for me, I also do combat training, the combonation of the two works it created a monster. lol.  the benefits that it builds u mentally and physcially and helps u with your breathing and circulation, good stuff man. total workout, 360.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

in ten years? i c my company in a monopoly state and that will come thru innovation and progression.

We caught up with one VERY busy Young Jack Thriller. You might remember him from his hilarious YouTube skits, his appearances on Nick Cannon's "Wild N' Out", or his weekly series on 50 Cents popular blog site, Thisis50.com named "So Disrespectful."




The Southern born comedian nicknamed "The King of Pop Comedy",  also did a lot of work with Atlanta comedian, Lil Duval. Looking to be more independent, he traveled to New York to pursue his goal of having a more successful career. "I didn't know what I was going to do or how I was going to do it, I just had to make the move", he said. Thriller began mocking interviews on YouTube...

Jack Thriller is heavy on twitter. Recently, he was going back and forth with rap groupie Kat Stacks. "I don't think she's really having a book." Her run is almost over. "She better come out with a sex tape or something-to stay relevant."

His stage name, Young Jack Thriller, is inspired by Michael Jackson. "He is the main reason I want to entertain." He knows he is destined to be a star. This is why he asked to have a star placed in his left eye   which he was born blind in.

Jack Thriller has a lot of work coming soon. He is currently working on five projects, including movies with Chrystale Wilson (Ronnie from The Players' Club), Don "DC" Curry, Reynaldo Rey and others. He also has a role in the highly anticipated movie "Things Fall Apart."  50 Cent, is going DEEP into character for this film. He is reported to have lost 65 pounds to play a cancer patient.

No unfortunately I've never experienced a Hell date. I feel most hell dates are blind dates and I've never been on a blind date.

Yes I would date a celeb but you just have to really understand the industry though.



Are you a sports fan? Can you play any at all?

Yes I love basketball and I actually can play.
